SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- The South Bend Common Council voted to approve an inter-local agreement that would move forward plans to consolidate the county's 911 call centers.
If St. Joe County approves the agreement tomorrow morning staffing plans could be drawn up immediately.
Dispatchers from their respective jurisdictions will have to make the transition to county employment.
Mayor Mark Neal assured the council that existing dispatchers will have the first shot at the positions before outside applicants are interviewed.
The council was also assured that new salaries will mirror current salaries.
The county is mandated by the State of Indiana to consolidate down to two call centers by the end of the year.
