'Riding to Remember': Hundreds honor fallen police officers, firefighters and veterans

If you were anywhere in Elkhart County Sunday you could probably hear them, more than 800 motorcycles were traveling together for 70 miles to honor fallen firefighters, police officers and veterans.

It’s all part of the 15th annual Riding to Remember charity event.

“We started with a motorcycle ride that began up in Elkhart, traveled down through Wakarusa, Nappanee, came here eventually to Goshen where we had a memorial service,” says Goshen Police and Fire Department Chaplain, Gregg Lanzen.

Many people spoke at the ceremony and the names of those who died in the line of duty were read.

“It will bring a tear to your eye when you listen to them and I was in the Navy for 20 years so I know what it’s about,” says one rider, Roger Hicks.

“Times like this, you know, everybody gets together, we all think about it, have a little fun and appreciate our country,” says another rider, Jerry Emily.

After the service everyone hopped back on their bikes and started heading to Central Park in Elkhart for food, drinks and live music.

“Everybody gets to know each other through riding and it’s like a brotherhood type thing, just getting out and riding,” says Laurel Hicks, “It’s for a good cause. That’s what it’s all about, giving back.

After a day like this some say taking one day out of the year to remember may not be enough.

“In fact, it would be really good if every day we would remember when we see a police officer, or we see a firefighter, or a paramedic, or an EMT, to just say thank you for serving our community and keeping us safe,” adds Lanzen.
