Elkhart Some residents in one Elkhart neighborhood are not happy about what they called a swarm of police officers over the holiday weekend.

Folks along West Garfield Avenue say it happened in response to an incident where an Elkhart police officer was seriously injured in an attack. Court documents say Cpl. Dustin Young was sent to the hospital after he was punched multiple times in the face.

Reese Haithcox, 21, of Chicago faces charges in the alleged fight. Police say he got violent after young confronted him about blocking traffic in the road.

After the fight, residents say they saw increased patrols, and said officers were rude and gave out tickets for things like jay walking and riding a bike without a bell on it.

The matter was discussed at Monday night’s city council meeting.

According to our reporting partners at the The Elkhart Truth, police officials say they only responded to complaints they’d received in the area.
