Police officers and firefighters were knocking on doors all over the city of Nappanee Tuesday night.

But it was for a good cause and they were calling on people to donate food for the city's largest food pantry.

It's called the Rescue Harvest. This is the third year for the event.

In the morning the Family Christian Development Center places a small red bag on the door. Later on at night at the sound of sirens people can bring the bag out full of non-perishable food.

Nappanee city employees, police officers, firefighters, and EMS workers go door to door to collect their items. It's turned into the center's food pantry, that's used daily.

“It's fun to see the police and the community workers get involved,” says Kelli Weaver, donating food. “So it's not always a bad situation when they are involved, it's a good one too.”

Ken Woodcox from the Family Christian Development Center says, “I guess the economy faltered about the same time our tornado hit, and at the time we had an increase of 49 percent. Which doubled and we've maintained that level each year.”
The FCDC plans to hold another drive next year.
