Referee at Carmel-Penn game collapses, taken to hospital

Friday night's 6A Semi-State game between Penn and Carmel had a very scary moment in the 2nd quarter when head official/referree Joe Calderazzo collapsed before a snap.

Calderazzo had to be resuscitated on the field by EMTs and personnel. The great news was that Calderazzo was able to wave to the crowd as he was stretchered off the field and taken to a Carmel hospital.

The IHSAA tells NewsCenter 16 that Calderazzo was conscious and under observation at a hospital. His condition was described as "guarded optimism."

Calderazzo is from Washington, Indiana.

WNDU would like to pass along our well wishes to Joe on a speedy recovery!
