FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo says a female red panda cub has been born there.

The zoo says the cub weighing about a third of a pound was born on Monday. It's the third litter of cubs to be born at the zoo in the last three years, but none of the three cubs born in 2012 and 2013 lived longer than two weeks.

Red pandas are an endangered species and difficult to breed and raise in zoos. The zoo says about half of all cubs born in zoos die within 30 days. Only a few dozen are born in U.S. zoos each year.

The zoo said Thursday that to improve the cub's chances of survival, a pathway in front of the red panda exhibit has been closed to visitors.
