Record Cash 5 lottery winner steps forward

SOUTH BEND A South Bend man has come forward to claim the record $669,000 Cash 5 jackpot that was hit Friday night in South Bend.

The winner is Stanley "Joe" Kalinowski of South Bend. The hard-working, blue-collar guy caught a break over the weekend when the numbers on his Cash 5 ticket matched all five numbers drawn in the biggest Cash 5 drawing in the history of the game.

As Kalinowski claimed his winnings at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis, he talked about his life and his plans for his windfall. The 53-year-old works in Elkhart assembling cargo trailers. Kalinowski is single and has no children.

"I work hard," said Kalinowski. "I'm the example they use to push the young guys at work. I'm the one they point to and say, 'See that guy, he's 53 and he's outworking you.' I might not be able to quit work with this, but I can breathe a little easier."

Even though he is hoping his windfall will afford him the luxury of eventually easing off the physical work, he's not really the kind of guy to rest on his laurels and take it easy.

"I say every day you should learn, laugh and get the 'stuff' scared out of you," joked Kalinowski. "I want to do it all in life... well, except for about 10 things."

After he meets with a financial planner, Kalinowski plans to cross a few things off his extensive life-to-do list, including becoming debt-free and buying a house.

Kalinowski purchased his Cash 5 ticket at One Stop at 1807 Lincoln Way East in South Bend.
