A man convicted of killing South Bend Police Officer Paul Deguch in 1997 will not receive a new trial.

At a hearing in December, Gregory Dickens returned to court so his attorneys could request a new trial. On Monday, a 94-page ruling was issued, which denied Dickens’ request.

His attorneys based Dickens’ plea for a new trial on the fact that he was forced to wear a shock belt in front of the jury at his original court proceedings. They also argued that his life sentence was inappropriate because he was a teenager when the jury convicted him.
