WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University has made several safety enhancements on its campus over the summer following a fatal shooting last January.

WISH-TV (http://bit.ly/1l1p5rW ) reports the changes were made based on recommendations from a panel commissioned to assess feedback given to the university during spring semester.

The university says it's installing emergency beacons and additional door locks in 27 large classrooms. The beacons are bright yellow boxes that light up, sound an alarm and display a message during an emergency.

Desktop pop-up alert windows have been added to most university-owned computers. They will display the same message alert as the beacons.

Purdue also integrated its emergency Twitter account with the message system and added a 24/7 emergency call center.

The university says it plans to expand the pilot program if it's successful.
