Sweepstakes scam in Michiana

Several people in Michiana are getting phone calls or letters telling them that they've won $2.5 million in the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. They're just required to pay $900 in taxes first.

The scammers are telling people they can only pay using a Green Dot MoneyPak card.

The Better Business Bureau says to look out for phone calls from Jamaica. They may come from an 876 number, and the person on the phone usually speaks with a heavy accent.

"Our advice is don't even talk to these callers at all. Just simply hang up, and if you receive any correspondence by mail, just simply trash it," said Dreama Jensen, area director for the Better Business Bureau of northern indiana.

The director said a good rule of thumb is to remember that you haven't won anything if you have to pay a fee to get it. Jensen advises people to take down telephone numbers and any other necessary information., and call the Better Business Bureau if there are any doubts.
