South Bend It’s Indiana’s oldest zoo and it is officially open for the season. The
Potawatomi Zoo opened for the season on Friday. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day until Thanksgiving.

The Zoo features more than 400 animals. There are also educational classes, special events, facility rentals and more.

New this season, they will be opening an exhibit this month. They are currently building a home for their red pandas.

On top of that, they have been preparing for this season’s opening. They have been doing construction, exhibit renovations, the cleaning crew has been picking up sticks and making the grounds pretty because nothing is really in bloom yet.

Executive Director Marcy Dean says they certainly had their work cut out for them this winter making sure all of the animals stayed safe. She says they used all of their strategies because this was one of the more challenging winters. They were constantly checking the furnaces, always had staff on hand and constantly cleared snow.

There is a lot to see this season and it all stars Friday. For more information you can check out the zoo’s website.
