South Bend Police say the man found in an alley Wednesday morning was not the victim of a homicide.

The man’s been identified as 56-year-old Keith Doaks.

A trash crew found Doaks around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, lying in an alley between Prast and Hartzer on the city’s West side.

South Bend Police and St. Joseph County Metro Homicide were on the scene for several hours investigating.

An autopsy performed Wednesday afternoon found no signs of trauma. But it could be weeks before police know what killed Doaks; that’s how long it will take for toxicology results to come back.

Several neighbors who were on the scene Wednesday say they expected the worst, because they’ve seen plenty of trouble come down their block.

“There’s a lot of drug activity going on here,” said neighbor Ken Laszcz. “And it's just a hot spot lately right around this area.”

While still tragic, Doaks’ manner of death is a bit of a relief for folks who say their block doesn’t need any more problems.
