Icy roads led to a series of accidents in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties this weekend, and now that the holidays are upon us, police are reminding everyone to drive safely.

Officers in Elkhart County responded to more than 20 crashes Saturday afternoon and evening. They said icy roadways like the US 20 bypass and CR 17 were prone to slide-offs.

Meanwhile over in Mishawaka, police say there were only a handful of crashes over the weekend.

Last week we talked to different police departments working on a safe holiday travel blitz, which means more officers patrolling the slick roadways.

“We're looking at the impaired driver, making sure you're buckled up, making sure the children are in the proper car seats and that they're buckled up,” said Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Department. “The last thing we want to see is that precious cargo be injured or fatally injured in that crash.”

Patience is the name of the game.

Police remind drivers to check their attitudes at home, and plan for longer driving times around congested shopping areas.
