An attempted carjacking ended safely in a parking lot today when police caught the carjacker in the act.
It happened Wednesday afternoon in a grocery store parking lot at the corner of Indiana Ave. and Michigan St. when police stopped a Chevy Suburban in connection with a narcotics investigation. The driver of the Suburban, Israel Garcia, 32 of South Bend, fled from officers on foot until he was stopped in the parking lot of St. Luke Memorial Church.
When officers caught up to him in the church lot, Garcia was attempting to carjack a church van being operated by a clergyman. Thankfully no one was injured in the attempted carjacking, and police took Garcia into custody.
Further investigation into the incident found about four ounces of cocaine inside the Chevy Suburban, Garcia was then booked into the St. Joseph County Jail for possession and dealing cocaine, attempting carjacking and resisting law enforcement.
