Police make arrest in 2012 Elkhart fatal crash

ELKHART, Ind. After an 18-month investigation, officers have charged a man accused of crashing a car and leaving his passenger behind to die.

Kyle Reames, 23, of Elkhart was taken into custody last week In connection with a crash that killed Jared Lay, 22.

It happened in Bristol in the early morning hours of July 7, 2012.

The case baffled police at first, since lay's body was found 50 feet from the crashed Jeep even though the seat belt was fastened.

Officers traced the jeep's registration back to Reames and who appeared injured and intoxicated when they interviewed him at his home

Reames denied any involvement.

But according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, he's now been charged with failing to return to the scene of a deadly crash.
