Police investigating early morning home invasion

The victim of the case was lucky a device possibly saved her property and her life.

Police say they received the call just before 6:30 Wednesday morning.

Two men apparently entered an unlocked home at the 29-600 block of California Road near Country Road 12.

They approached Shirley Neel, 70, in her bed, demanding money from her.

The suspects shone a flashlight in her eyes, which made it tough to give police any details of who they were but she did say it looked like one of them was holding a handgun.

She wasn't hurt and police think this may because a device around her neck which caused the men to flee the scene before any damage was done.

"I really think they're intentions were spoiled by the life alert device that was worn by the victim,” says Capt. Jim Bradberry from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department. “I think that in this case, it was a good thing she had that on today because you know, at that point if you're in bed it's really hard to call 9-1-1 right away. She's able just by the push of a button to activate that device, got a hold of the authorities right away, and we responded right away."

The victim pushed the button on her life alert device and was able to immediately speak with help.

Thankfully the suspects fled before they could harm her or take anything from her home.

Police are still looking for suspects and ask anyone who may have been in the area or seen suspicious behavior to please come forward.
