South Bend police are investigating after shots were fired during a fight near the St. James Court apartments on the corner of East Colfax Avenue and North Eddy Street.
It happened around 4:15 Wednesday night.
Witnesses say the fight started when former residents of the apartment complex stopped by to pick up some of their things.
At some point, a large fight broke out.
Witnesses say those involved used bricks and crow bars during the altercation.
As the fight continued, gunshots were fired.
They hit a car that a mother was driving with her three children.
"I ran in the house to get my brother and when I ran into the house to get my brother I was talking to him and all he heard was pow, pow, pow," said a witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity for safety reasons. "Here she come around the corner when I got back outside. She was like 'I got hit, I got hit,' I said, 'What you mean you got hit?'"
Police say a bullet fragment was found in the woman's scalp.
She was transported to the hospital by ambulance and was last listed in good condition.
South Bend Police are still investigating. No arrests have been made in the case.
They say the suspects were last seen driving a tan van.
