A 21-year-old man is facing numerous charges after leading police on an early morning chase across county lines and crashing his car into a Goshen business.

The chase began in Ligonier after a fuel theft, according to Goshen Police. The driver and two passengers then made their way to Goshen where city police pursued them with lights and sirens. The driver refused to stop or slow down. He repeatedly tried to crash his own vehicle into squad cars. Eventually, he tried to collide with on-coming traffic. A Goshen resident was forced to leave her lane to avoid him, which resulted in damage to her car.

The suspect, who has been identified as Abraham Villegas, lost control of the car at U.S. 33 and 10th Street. Police say his vehicle flipped over multiple times , sheared off a utility pole and then came to rest when it collided with a Goshen taco restaurant called Taqueria San Jose. The incident caused extensive damage to the building.
Villegas, along with the rear seat passenger, fled the scene on foot. A 15-year-old female passenger suffered major injury to her knee and was taken to IU Health Goshen.

Police found Villegas in the 300 block of South 10th Street and he was also taken to IU Health Goshen to be treated for minor injuries then transported to the Elkhart County Jail. The other passenger in the car, a 14-year-old male, was located at the intersection of 6th Street and Lincoln Avenue.

The car that Villegas was driving had been reported stolen from Elkhart Saturday night, according to police. Goshen Police said that the owner of the car is Sonya Hughes, who is the mother of the 14-year-old male. The teen was reported as a Runaway and has a warrant for his arrest.

Villegas has been charged with criminal recklessness, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and resisting law enforcement-fleeing. He is also held for an Elkhart County Warrant.
