Police: Warming up vehicle could result in theft

South Bend, Ind. Winter is right around the corner, but police warn to not warm up your car while you're not in it.

South Bend auto thefts are up nearly 18 percent this year.

Police say most of the thefts happen because a key is left in the ignition.

Police studied a northeast side neighborhood for three weeks.

Five vehicles were taken, and in every case, the key was in the ignition or hidden in the glove box.

Police say the auto thefts will happen, but most can be prevented.
