A phone scam in Indiana is targeting Medicare patients.

Several reports have come from LaPorte County about a caller pretending to be from Medicare or the Social Security Administration.

They say they need to update and verify your information in order to send a new Medicare card. They ask for your social security number, birth date or credit information.

Sometimes a so-called "manager" comes on the line to threaten those who refuse to give out the information.

Police say you should hang up immediately and contact the company yourself if you're not sure.
