The dog days of summer are upon us, and that puts our pets at risk.

Two major things facing our pets are mosquitoes and allergies.

Newscenter 16’s Pet Vet, Dr. David Visser, has some advice on how to help your pet cope during this time of the year.

Right now, allergies are a main problem facing pets. Pollen, mold, dust, food ingredients, and fleas and insect bites can all stir allergy problems in our animals.

Most of the allergies your pets face can be managed though. Avoidance is the best way to manage allergies. Certain medications can help our pets cope too.

As for mosquitoes, the pests can cause some serious damage to our animals, like heartworms. The most important way to protect your pet against mosquitoes is by making sure you can provide them with a heartworm preventative.
