South Bend, Ind. Volunteers are the heart of non-profit organizations, including Pet Refuge.
The no-kill shelter recently moved into a new facility in South Bend, located at 4626 Burnett Dr, and they're looking for people who want to make a difference in the lives of animals looking for their forever homes.
Bonnie Richardson, a long time volunteer and head of the dog department, joined us Friday on 16 Morning News along with a dog up for adoption, Chet. He is a beagle, about 8 years old.
Richardson says caretakers will get training so you should not be intimidated.
"We have orientation and we train new people for weeks and weeks so they're comfortable taking care of the dogs," Richardson said, "and the cats need help too."
Richardson says volunteers will be feeding, cleaning, playing with the dogs, and walking them.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can go to the shelter office to fill out an application or do so online, just click here. The volunteer coordinator will then contact you.
