Periodical Christmas tree unveiled at St. Mary's Wednesday

An eight foot Christmas tree made up of periodicals was unveiled by Librarians at Saint Mary's College Wednesday.

The display was constructed using 1,366 volumes. The star placed on the top of the tree is the book titled "A Child Asks for a Star" written by former Saint Mary's College President, Sister M. Madeleva Wolff.

Librarians say the Christmas display took an estimated 18 hours over the course of six days to create.

“You'll notice that the tree has what appears to be a red ribbon going around it so we had to logistically figure out where we were going to place the red volume books against the green to be able to kind of give that ribbon effect,” said John Kovach the College Archivist. “And then we thought we would let it go a step further, let's add lights. And so we were picking up yellow volumes and dropping them in every so often to kind of give the appearance of a light on the tree.”

What happens if a student needs to use one of the periodicals? Not to worry, we're told the content can all be found on online-databases.
