Mishawaka, Ind. Hundreds of Penn High School students came together Friday evening to remember one of their own, who tragically took his own life earlier this week.

Gavin Grimes, 17 committed suicide on Wednesday at his Mishawaka home.

His 18th birthday would have been this Monday.

Friday night Gavin's classmates packed into the school's parking lot to honor his life and share their memories of the teen.

Gavin, who would have been a senior this fall, was a member of the Penn's wrestling team, and enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.

Students say they organized the vigil to help their peers, and the entire community, cope with their loss.

“He's a good kid,” says longtime friend Alex Price. “From the moment you met him, he really made an impact on you that you remembered for the rest of your time. He's really goofy. Anytime you saw him walking down the hall he'd have that big smile on his face, and he'd really just cheer you up.”

Visitation will be held Saturday from four to 8 p.m. in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel on South Michigan Street in South Bend.
