Pedestrian killed in a train accident

Posted: Wed 11:23 PM, Aug 08, 2012

A Stevensville woman was killed overnight when a freight train ran over her in Berrien County as she laid on the tracks.

It happened around 3:45 Wednesday morning on the CSX Railroad tracks near Defay Road in Lincoln Charter Township.

Police were called to the scene when a train engineer saw 25-year-old Jessica Smith lying across the tracks as he came around a curve.

The Grand Rapids man says he sounded his whistle and activated an emergency stop process, but couldn't stop the 66-car train in time to avoid hitting her.

Police are now asking for tips in figuring out what happened. Anyone with information should call township police at 269-429-2444.
