Patel out on bond and in court for first appearance

32 year old Purvi Patel made her first appearance in court today.

Patel is the Granger woman who allegedly placed her dead newborn born in a dumpster over the weekend.

Patel had her head and face fully covered with a light colored scarf as she walked in and out of court.

Patel did remove the scarf during her brief appearance before the judge.

The hearing was routine. The judge entered a plea of not guilty on Patel’s behalf and told her to return to court on July 31st.

Court documents allege that Patel took drugs she obtained from Hong Kong in an effort to end her pregnancy, and that her newborn—when found in a dumpster—weighed just a pound and a half.

Medical experts say they are “sure” that the child was born alive and had taken a breath. It’s alleged that Patel initially said she had not seen the child moving or breathing and believed it to be dead.

While Patel told medical personnel at the hospital that she was about two months into her pregnancy, an examination of the newborn estimated the age at 28 weeks (about seven months).

Court documents further indicate that Patel showed up at the hospital Saturday night of her own free will to seek treatment and that it was obvious to doctors that she had recently given birth

Patel faces a Class A Felony charge; neglect of a dependant causing death.
