According to our NewsCenter 16 archives, Sunday's twin-engine jet crash marks the first fatal aviation accident in South Bend in nearly two years.

In April 2011, a sudden and powerful gust of wind caused a single engine plane to do a cartwheel down runway 9R-27L at the South Bend Regional Airport.

The pilot, who was the only person on board at the time, was taken to Memorial Hospital alive, but later died from his injuries. No wind advisories had been issued prior to the crash.

And who can forget the Dec. 2004 emergency landing along State Road 933 in Roseland?

In that case, a 12-seat single propeller plane had just taken off from the South Bend Regional Airport when it reported engine problems.

Miraculously, the pilot managed to land the aircraft during a busy Tuesday afternoon commute, only hitting a utility pole in the process.

The pilot and his three passengers were uninjured.
