South Bend Bakeries around the area have been working hard Tuesday morning making a "Fat Tuesday" staple, paczkis.

Paczkis are pastries originally made to use up any remaining ingredients in the house before Lent. Initially popular in the Polish community, they're now a staple of Fat Tuesday celebrations in all communities.

One popular store to buy Paczkis at is Dainty Maid Bakeshop in downtown South Bend. Each year they sell about 12,000 paczkis. This year, they started selling them last Monday and will continue to sell them till Friday, March 7.

Paczkis were originally just prune flavored, but these days they come in all sorts of flavors like strawberry cream, apple, raspberry and lemon.
According to Dainty Maid, the most popular flavor is the strawberry one. It is the only one that has fresh fruit in it.

Dainty Maid Bakeshop is opened at 6 a.m. and will stay open until 5 p.m. They are located at 231 S. Michigan Street in South Bend.
