Scary moments for a South Bend man parking his car overnight as he was chased and shot on his way home.
Around 3 a.m. Sunday, police say Jacob Gondocs, 21, was shot in the back of the head, in the Kids Kingdom playground parking lot near Potawatomi Park.
According to police, Gondocs had parked his pick-up truck and was walking to his house along the 800 block of S. Ironwood Rd., when two man began following him. When they got within ten feet, Gondocs told police he started walking faster, as the men shouted “nice truck.”
Moments later, the 21-year-old heard a loud gunshot and felt pain in the back of his head. His mother drove him to the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka with a bullet graze wound to his head, and a blown out right ear drum.
The mother tells NewsCenter16, her son was in and out of the hospital quickly, in about 30 minutes.
Because of the parking lot's poor lighting, detectives on the case have a very weak suspect description; two black males, one around 6' and the other "just a little shorter." Gondocs said both suspects never demanded anything from him, never told him to stop and did not demand his money or wallet.
The lack of evidence and information is frustrating yes, but investigators are just thankful the bullet missed his brain.
