Penn, Oregon-Davis will each play for a girls hoops state title

Penn and Oregon-Davis will both play for a state championship in girls basketball next Saturday in Terre Haute.

The Kingsmen defeated Logansport 44-41 in the 4A Semi-State at Crown Point Saturday afternoon while Oregon Davis beat Lafayette Central Catholic 67-46 in the 1A Semi-State earlier at Crown Point.
Senior Jess Alexander scored 13 points as Penn overcame a 6-point 4th quarter deficit to beat Logansport 44-41 Saturday afternoon at Crown Point to advance to the 4A State Finals next Saturday in Terre Haute.

Penn dominated the start of the game, jumping out to a 12-2 lead after one quarter and holding a 19-12 advantage at halftime.

Logansport rallied and a bucket from Katrina Nenendorf tied the game at 27 after three quarters. The Berries then scored the first six points of the 4th quarter to open up a 33-27 advantage.

Penn battled back and a bucket from sophomore Kaitlyn Marenyi put Penn up 36-35 late in the 4th and the Kingsmen never let the lead go from there.

Penn now heads to the state finals for the 2nd time in school history. The only other appearance came in 2011 when the current seniors were freshman. The Kingsmen lost that game 43-29 at Jeffersonville.

The 4A State Finals will tipoff after at 8pm next Saturday at Hulman Center in Terre Haute. Penn is still awaiting word on who they will face.

The town of Hamlet temporarily moved to Crown Point Saturday afternoon to cheer on the Oregon-Davis girls basketball team as the Lady Bobcats defeated Lafayette Central Catholic 67-46 in the 1A Semi-State at Crown Point.

Oregon-Davis is off to the 1A State Championship game for the 2nd time in school history. They will face Vincennes Rivet at 10:30am next Saturday in Terre Haute.

Alicia McIntosh led Oregon-Davis with 18 points and Ashley Campbell added 15 for the #1 ranked Bobcats, who improved to 22-2 on the season.

Oregon-Davis jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the 1st quarter before LCC battled back to within one heading to the 2nd. An 8-0 run in the 2nd quarter helped the Bobcats push the lead to 32-26 at halftime.

Central Catholic scored the opening points of the 3rd quarter to get back within 3, but it was all Oregon-Davis from there. The Bobcats pushed the lead to 12 after three en route to the 19 point victory.

Oregon-Davis is making its 2nd ever appearance in the state finals. Their only other appearance came in 2007 when Oregon-Davis won both the girls and boys state titles in 1A.
