One person injured in a shooting in Elkhart

Elkhart, Ind. An area that is usually filled with the sounds and sights of children playing turned into a crime scene Wednesday evening, when gunshots rang out near an Elkhart school.

According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, it all unfolded just after seven o'clock in the 800 block of McDonald Street, across from the playground of Mary Beck Elementary School. Investigators say one person was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital by bystanders.

Several male suspects reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle, but police have not released any descriptions. The victim is believed to have suffered non-life threatening injuries.

According to neighbors this area is unfortunately no stranger to crime. This past June they say there were three drive-by shootings in the same block of McDonald in the span of just one week. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
