UPDATE: Name released of man, 73, killed in Elkhart hit-and-run

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of south Main Street, near Concord Mall.

ELKHART, Ind. A man was killed after he was hit by a car Friday night in Elkhart.

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of S. Main Street, near Concord Mall.

Police say Kent Phouangmalay, 21, was heading southeast on Main Street, when he hit Frank L. Nelson, 73, who was attempting to cross Main Street.

Police say Nelson had just parked his car on the northeast side of Main Street in a parking lot. Two off-duty Elkhart City officers witnessed the crash.

Phouangmalay allegedly left the scene, and was followed southeast on Main Street to County Road 20 west to Concord Mall Drive.

Phouangmalay was taken into custody in the JC Penney parking lot. Police say he was in possession of marijuana. He was taken to the hospital for drug and alcohol testing.

The FACT, Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, is investigating the crash. Charges are pending.
