A Michiana teen was flown to the hospital after swerving to miss a horse and buggy.
The crash happened on CR 36, east of CR 37 in Elkhart County around 10:30 Friday night.
Police say Dustin Schwartz, 16, of Goshen was traveling eastbound on CR 36 when he tried to pass a horse and buggy.
The horse became spooked, and Schwartz swerved to miss hitting the animal.
This caused the teen to lose control of his 1997 Ford Expedition. He ended up veering off the road, striking a mailbox and telephone box before hitting a ditch.
The impact of hitting the ditch caused the SUV to rollover, ejecting Schwartz in the process. He was eventually airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for head injuries.
A passenger in the vehicle, Luke Beechy, 16 of Topeka, was also injured. He was taken to IU Goshen Health Hospital for chest and neck pain.
Police say Schwartz was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, but Beechy was.
The investigation is still ongoing by the Elkhart County Sheriff Department.
