A man is recovering in the hospital Saturday night after firefighters rescued him from a burning abandoned church in South Bend.
Firefighters responded to the fire on the 600 block of South St. Joseph Street late Saturday afternoon.
The South Bend Battalion Chief Kevin Kolber said burning cloths in the basement could have started the fire but the cause is still unknown. He also said they were hearing conflicting reports on how many people were actually in the building.
“We had reports that he was the only one in the building, then we heard there were two people,” said South Bend Battalion Chief Kevin Kolber. “Then we heard there were four people, and we did a search of all four floors, two or three searches actually, and nobody else was found so we do not know if they escaped or if no one was in there but there is nobody else inside.”
The one man they did find was taken to Memorial Hospital for possible smoke inhalation and is being kept overnight. There were no other injuries reported.
