A Tuesday afternoon police chase ends with a SWAT team situation in a South Bend neighborhood. Now, one man is under arrest for the attempted murder of a police officer, according to the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.
The incident began at the corner of Ford and Brookfield Streets on the city's west side just after 3:30 p.m. . A uniformed officer was chasing after a vehicle and the driver refused to follow the officer's instructions. The suspect drove his car onto the sidewalk and then took off running. A foot pursuit ensued and the suspect then opened fire on the officer. The officer did not return fire, according to Metro Homicide investigators.
The male suspect, who is not being identified by police, fled into a vacant house about two blocks away. South Bend police and SWAT team members surrounded the house and got the suspect out.
Investigators and a K-9 unit surveyed the scene for hours after the shooting. But, the gun used by the suspect has not been located.
The officer and suspect sustained no injuries from the shooting. Metro Homicide is handling the case because it involves shots being fired at an officer.
Formal charges are expected to be filed by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office Wednesday.
