MICHIGAN CITY, Ind.--- One man is dead after a crash on the Toll Road.
The accident happened on Sunday around 7:15 p.m. local time, near mile marker 53 in LaPorte County. This is by Michigan City and about a mile west of the service plaza in that area.
Maria Maldonado, 56 of Aurora, Illinois, fell asleep behind the wheel of her Honda Civic.
The car veered off to the right and hit a guardrail. It then traveled across both westbound lanes, down into the median and over into the eastbound lanes. The Honda then smacked into another guardrail and bounced into the path of a semi.
Lawrence Letourneau, 54 of Duluth, Minnesota was driving the semi. He was not hurt in this accident. His truck is owned by Halvor Lines out of Superior, Wisconsin.
A passenger of the Honda died in the crash. The driver's husband, Robertino Maldonado, 57, had to be extricated from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma.
Maria Maldonado was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital. She is expected to survive.
Both she and her husband were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Letoureau was also wearing a seat belt. The load he was carrying stayed intact.
Eastbound lanes in the area were closed for two hours following the crash.
