Elkhart high school students win $1,000 for medical field trip

Sometimes a band-aid can go a long way in making a kid feel better. For students in the Medical Services program at the Elkhart Area Career Center a $1,000 check is doing the trick.

They just won Martin's Supermarket's One School at a Time grant that will help pay for a field trip to Chicago.

Their upcoming field trip is just one more exciting way the kids are learning hands on skills in the health care industry.

NewsCenter 16’s Tricia Sloma visited their lab to learn more.
“It's like a real life experience, said Franchesca Rodino, an Elkhart Central junior. “You are able to take blood pressure from a real person.”

These real experiences are in a classroom, and these students are future medical professionals.

“I like to care for people,” said Adam Rodts, a Mishawaka High School senior. “That's my passion. If I could do anything with my life it would be helping people.”

“These guys are great. They are doing so well. I couldn't be more proud of all of them,” said Kathy Overholt, Elkhart Area Career Center instructor.

A nurse, Kathy Overholt is thrilled that the program won a $1,000 One School at a Time grant. The money will help pay for a trip to Chicago's Science and Industry museum.

“They have two hands on labs, said Overholt. “One the kids will work in an open heart surgery simulation. The other will be an er scenario diagnose and treat type hands on learning.”

I'm really excited to be able to like real life experience even more,” said Rodino. “It's going to be really beneficial and I'm really happy that we're able to do this.”

“I'm definitely excited for it. I'm ready to experience the full on capacity of what I'm going to be doing with my life, said Rodts”

Helping these kids to become career ready while still in high school.

There are 54 students from several different schools in Elkhart County and beyond at the Elkhart Area Career Center.
