New Olive Township Trustee voted in

Olive Township, Ind. There's a new Olive Township Trustee. St. Joseph County Democratic Party leaders held a caucus Monday night at the New Carlisle Public Library.

Members unanimously voted for South Bend Police Officer Nick Zarate. Zarate has served on the force for 17 years.

He was the only candidate who fulfilled all the requirements to replace John Michalski. Michalski was forced to resign after an audit showed he repeatedly stole taxpayer money.

The newly elected trustee says he plans to help the town and enforce the law.

"I'm still going to be a full time police officer,” says Nick Zarate the new Olive Township Trustee. “This is a part time job, it's olive township is really small population wise. Its big geographic wise and some farm fields. Some of the larger townships like Penn or Portage township trustees those are full time positions."

Zarate's family and St. Joseph County Democratic members welcomed him to his new position after his oath of office.
