"Old 31" sees some problems while drivers adjust to new 31

It may be smooth sailing on the new U.S. 31 that opened Thursday morning but there are some small problems on the old 31 that's now left in pieces.

Thursday barriers were put up at the intersection of Kern and the old 31.

Drivers couldn't go north of the Kern Road intersection.

It put a dent in business for a handful of small shops on 31. By mid-day Thursday afternoon a couple of the barriers were removed.

INDOT didn't want drivers trying to still use the old 31 as way to get into South Bend because the road dead ends.

However even the partial barriers a day later have created some confusion.

Drivers don't know if they should use the side streets or are allowed to go around the barriers.

Jennifer Gravseth from Hoosier Sports says, “It's all kind of vague of when things are happening and it’s hard to plan your business and what to tell customers. Can you around it? Can you get here? And from the light it really doesn't look like you can get here.”

Although several business along the old 31 say they haven't been kept up to date on what's going on along the road..

INDOT says they have been in touch and met with all of the businesses to keep them informed.

The plan is to re-pave the old 31 south of Kern Road.

INDOT plans to redesign the road north of Kern Road, making it a local road with only two lanes.
