A St. Joseph County police officer responding to a standoff found himself in the back of an ambulance before he even made it to the scene.
Around 7 p.m. Monday night, Corporal Lonnie Foresman crashed his car near the intersection of New and Redwood Roads, just northwest of Potato Creek State Park.
Cpl. Foresman was about seven miles away from the scene of the standoff, when his vehicle struck several deer that had walked onto the roadway. The impact sent his car through a roadside ditch and into a field, where it finally came to a stop.
"He was in and out of consciousness after the crash," St. Joseph County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek said. "He was strapped in, but something may have hit him in the head."
Cpl. Foresman was taken to the hospital, where he was treated in the ER and released for neck, back and hip injuries sustained in the crash.
