Notre Dame checks in at 5th in BCS Standings

Coming off a 20-13 overtime win over Stanford Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium, the 6-0 Irish are ranked 5th in the initial BCS Standings, released Sunday night.

"There is a sense of pride putting Notre Dame in the Top 5," Irish coach Brian Kelly said Sunday of the mood of the players.

The BCS Standings are based on three components: 1/3 Coaches poll, 1/3 Harris Poll, 1/3 computers.

The Irish are 5th in both in the both the Coaches and Harris Polls and 2nd in the computer rankings. That means Notre Dame has room to grow based on their schedule ahead. With road games at Oklahoma and USC still on the horizon, the Irish should remain near the top of the computers if they win out.

Alabama is 1st in the BCS Standings followed by Florida, Oregon and Kansas State.

"We talk about being a championship program and let the rest take care of itself," Kelly said.

Notre Dame hosts BYU next Saturday at 3:30 at Notre Dame Stadium. The Cougars are 4-3 after 42-24 loss at home to now 8th ranked Oregon State.

Notre Dame's next road game is at Oklahoma in 13 days. The Sooners crushed Texas on Saturday and are ranked 9th in the BCS.

USC is the final game of the regular season. The Trojans are 10th in the BCS Standings.

With the loss Saturday, Stanford checks in at 20th in the BCS Standings.

There are no Big Ten teams in the BCS Standings. Ohio State is not eligible since they are on probation.
