Six days after seeing her Notre Dame career end in the women's basketball national championship game, Kayla McBride learned where her basketball career will continue next.
The Irish senior and All-American was selected 3rd overall in the WNBA Draft Monday night by the San Antonio Stars.
It marks the 3rd straight year the 3rd overall pick was a former Notre Dame player. Dev Peters went #3 to Minnesota in 2012 while Skylar Diggins was picked 3rd by the Tulsa Shock last season.
Diggins' squad could have selected McBride with the 2nd overall pick but instead went with another lefty point guard, Baylor's Odyssey Sims.
Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike went #1 overall to the Connecticut Sun.
McBride departs Notre Dame having led the Irish to the Final Four in all four of her seasons, including three trips to the national title game.
Her teammate Natalie Achonwa was picked 9th overall by the Indiana Fever. Achonwa, who will have surgery on her torn ACL later this week, will miss the entire 2014 WNBA season.
With the selection of McBride and Achonwa, Notre Dame now has five first round draft picks in the last three seasons.
