SOUTH BEND Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley and dancer Judith Jamison are among seven people who will be awarded honorary degrees by the University of Notre Dame at its May commencement.
O'Malley was appointed last year by Pope Francis to a council of eight cardinals charged with assisting him with the governance of the Catholic Church. Jamison is an American dance icon.
Others receiving honorary degrees are former Amoco vice president W. Douglas Ford; the Rev. Ray Hammond, chairman of an anti-crime collaborative in Boston; Evelyn Hu, a pioneer in the field of nanoscale electronic and photonic devices; and University of Iowa President Sally Mason.
The university previously announced University of Oxford chancellor Christopher Patten will be commencement speaker and receive an honorary degree during the May 18 ceremony.
