Notre Dame happy to have Rees at quarterback

Ask anyone associated with the Notre Dame football program and they'll tell you the team is very confident that Tommy Rees can lead the Irish to big things in 2013. And unless they are all very good actors, it's not just a matter of "saying the right things" to the media, these guys really believe it.

Rees is back in the saddle as the Notre Dame quarterback in 2013 thanks to a suspension to 2012 starter Everett Golson. Rees, who was the ND starter to end both 2010 and 2011, was Golson's backup last season. Because he already had starting experience under his belt, the backup role proved to be a great learning ground for Rees.

"I think it's kind of a different view of what you are looking at and you kind of understand the game from a different aspect," Rees explains. "That ultimately will help me in the long run. I think I've learned a lot from that experience."

The reason it helps Rees out so much, is that he's considered a true student of the game.

"His brain is his biggest strength," Irish offensive coordinator Chuck Martin says. "He's a very very smart son of a football coach that loves that part of the game and I think has always loved that part of the game. Well beyond his years as a quarterback in understanding what we are trying to do and what defenses are trying to do to take away those things."

"I don't think we are going to miss a beat with Tommy this year," senior captain and wide receiver TJ Jones explains. "I think a lot of people kind of underestimate him and over look him and he uses it as motivation. We know what we have--others may not. That kind of gives us motivation as well to work that much harder to be that much better not only for Tommy but with him."

Rees, Jones and the Irish open the 2013 season Saturday at 3:30 at Notre Dame Stadium against Temple. You can watch the game live on WNDU. NewsCenter 16 gets you started with a one hour pregame show at 2pm Saturday on Channel 16.
