Trevor Cooney scored 33 points and tied a Syracuse record with nine 3-pointers as the #1 ranked Orange held off Notre Dame 61-55 at the Carrier Dome Monday night.
The Irish led 12-9 with 12 minutes left in the 1st half, when Syracuse went on a 13-0 run and closed the half on a 22-6 run to go up 31-18 at halftime.
But Notre Dame refused to die, battling back multiple times in the 2nd half pulling within 3 late with the ball and the chance to tie the game up. But the Irish could never get closer.
Garrick Sherman scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss. Steve Vasturia scored a career high 13 points and Pat Connaughton added 11 points.
The Irish drop to 12-11 overall and 3-7 in the ACC.
Syracuse is one of only two undefeated teams left in college basketball and took over the #1 ranking earlier in the day on Monday after Arizona lost to Cal on Saturday night. The Orange are 22-0.
Syracuse returns home to host North Carolina at Noon on Saturday.
