Notre Dame is investing more in faculty research, and it is paying off.
There has been an increase in the amount of intellectual property being developed. Researchers developed 55 inventions in 2012.
There were only 17 in 2002.
Officials believe the increased funding and awareness of the need to commercialize research. Notre Dame spent $158 million on research last academic year.
That is nearly twice as much as it spent five years ago.
But the University still trails schools like Purdue, which spent $622 million on research in 2011.
