A local school paid tribute to a beloved doctor who spent over six decades serving the Wakarusa community with a football field named in his honor.
On Sunday, Wa-Nee Community Schools renamed the NorthWood Middle School football field to “Doc Abel Field” in the namesake of Dr. Robert M. Abel.
Dr. Abel, affectionately known as “Doc Abel” by those in the community devoted his life to serving the Nappanee community and the school for over 60 years. Doc Abel not only started the Wakarusa football program in 1965, he also served as team doctor for many years thereafter.
“This was just a fit for us, doc started football here in Wakarusa, he's always been a part of the school here, community supporter team doctor, he's active in promoting and sponsoring the school and academics as well,” said Superintendent Joe Sabos.
The dedication was appropriately held in the school’s gymnasium Sunday afternoon, and many turned out to show their appreciation for the 89-year-old community figure.
