Newman clinging to wild card spot with two races to go before the Chase

South Bend's Ryan Newman was racing well and poised for a Top 10 finish before a multi car crash caused him to finish 21st Saturday night at Bristol.

Newman, battling for one of the two wild card spots with just three races before the chase entering the night, needed a strong finish and didn't get it.

But he got something perhaps even better---a top five finish from Joey Logano. Logano, who held one of the wild card spots entering the night, moved into the top 10 in the chase standings because of his finish Saturday.

The Chase field pits the top 10 drivers in the standings, plus two wild cards. Wild cards are determined by wins and then points. With Logano now in the top 10, his wild card spot now goes to Newman, who was on the outside looking in entering the night.

Newman is the 2nd wild card behind Martin Truex Jr. With two races left, Newman could be bumped for the spot if the likes of Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch or Jeff Gordon were to win one of the final two races or if Logano would drop back out of the top 10.

It's confusing but this much is simple. As of right now, Newman is clinging to the final spot in the Chase.

Fellow South Bend native David Stremme finished 17th.

Matt Kenesth won the race.
