NIPSCO customers in Wyatt will soon have lower bills thanks to a new wind turbine at the Wyatt Treatment Plant.
The ribbon cutting was held Friday. It's the largest wind turbine in St. Joseph County. It will provide roughly 40 percent of the power the plant uses.
"It works out very well for the residents in Wyatt because the full benefit of the wind turbine is for the residents of Wyatt and the rates that they will pay over the course of the future," explains Don Smessaert the President of the St. Joseph County Regional Water and Sewer Board
The turbine is the first of its kind in the United States to be funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Water and Environmental Program to use wind energy to help offset electricity cost increases and help stabilize customers’ rates.
