A heavily-traveled South Bend roadway is getting a new addition to help keep folks in the community safe whether they're on foot or behind the wheel.
Starting Thursday, a pedestrian crossing signal will be in operation on North Twyckenham Drive near Vaness Street, by Notre Dame's campus.
If pedestrians are present, the signal will flash yellow and then turn to a solid yellow, warning both north and southbound traffic to slow down.
When it changes to double solid red signals, drivers are required to stop and allow any foot traffic to cross.
The signal will then be inactive, until the next time it's activated by a pedestrian. This replaces the existing signal located at the intersection of Twyckenham and Vaness.
